Federal University Gusau

THE HISTORY OF FEDERAL UNIVERSITY GUSAU

The Federal University Gusau, known FUGUS in short, is a public, conventional, co-educational, research University located in Gusau, Zamfara State. It is one of the three new Federal Universities which were established on the 18th February, 2013 and it started academic session in 2014/15 session.

The core academic structure of the Federal University, Gusau is developed based upon the approved guidelines of the National Universities Commission (NUC) in the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) documents, as well as other norms from other relevant stakeholders.

The President approved the appointment of Professor Ben Chuks Okeke and Alhaji Ibrahim Bawa Kaura as the pioneer Vice Chancellor and Registrar respectively.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ben Chuks Okeke, despite issuance of certificate of occupancy of the permanent site to the then Minister of Education Prof. Ruqayya Rufa’i, the formative days of the University was indeed difficult because of pressure coming from the host communities of Gusau and Bungudu as a result of non-payment of compensation to the farmers and land owner’s from the duo communities by State Government. This delay in payment of compensation resulted in the delay in the take-off and adjustment of the master plan of the University.

As soon as the University moved to its permanent site, it got the approval of National Universities Commission (NUC) to start academic activities. The approval was contained in a correspondence from the commission to Join Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Registrar, via letter with reference number NUC/ES/95/VOL.8/177 dated 10th January, 2014. With this approval, Federal University Gusau (FUGUS) went on to set a record as the first new University to have taken-off on its permanent campus among the twelve Universities established in 2013. More so, FUGUS become the first University to have achieved that feat with permanent campus structures despite the issues of non-payment of compensation to the farmers. The agenda and basis of the University are encapsulated in its vision and mission statement.

The Federal University Gusau witnessed transition in February, 2016 when the pioneer Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ben Chucks Okeke was sacked by the Federal Government and appointed Prof. Magaji Garba as the second Vice Chancellor. On assumption to duty, Prof. Magaji Garba embarked on serious advocacy visit to Emirs across the state having learned that the major impediment to the structural development of the University was the inability of the Zamfara State Government to pay the outstanding land compensation in which the University was set-up. The Vice Chancellor after engaging on these visits was able to have the State Governor, His Excellency, Alhaji Abdul’aziz Yari Abubakar Shettiman Mafara paid the compensation and that paved way for the University to have full control over the land.

The FUGUS had from that February, 2016 witnessed unprecedented development with the commitment of the present administration of Prof. Magaji Garba.
